Running for Office: Gonzales City Council, Matassa
GONZALES — With 12 years of service on the City Council, Democrat Kenny Matassa, 58, says experience would prove useful during the next four years as two other council members and the mayor have chosen not to seek re-election.
The city has seen many improvements, such as the Jambalaya Park, Spray Park, and Olympic-style pool, during his tenure with the city, he said in announcing his bid for re-election to the council.
Matassa added that the city has seen increases in manpower and high-tech equipment and facilities for police and fire protection.
“I am strongly committed to continued improvements in public services as long as they are accomplished with fiscal responsibility,” he said.
As additional evidence, Matassa pointed to the improvement of the city’s Fire Department rating from Class 4 to Class 2, resulting in insurance savings during his tenure as Fire Department commissioner.
Matassa has been employed by Ascension Parish government for the past 15 years and is the director of the Health Department and supervisor of utilities.
He has also owned and operated the former Guiseppe’s Restaurant and was a member of the Carpenter’s Local Union No. 2258.
His community service includes Fourth Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus Council 2657, member of several ministries at St. Theresa Catholic Church, president of the St. Joseph’s Altar Society and a past president of St. Theresa School Board.
Democrat Brad “Plug” Lavigne is challenging Matassa in the Oct. 4 primary election.
