Ward 2 District 3 Justice of the Peace Vernell Haynes, running for re-election, said he has the time, experience and temperament required to continue serving in the job.

After serving as justice of the peace for 18 years, Haynes, 68, is seeking a fourth term.

Haynes, a Democrat, has two challengers for the seat, Democrats Maurice Franks and Moses M. Evans Jr.

The district is bordered on the north by Dyer Road, the south by Prescott Road, the Comite River on the east and Southern University on the west.

According to his announcement, Haynes is a graduate of Southern University with masters degrees in health and physical education and administration.

Haynes worked as a teacher, counselor and administrator for 37 years in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system before retiring.

Haynes said in the announcement that he is a lifelong member of the Nazarene Baptist Church and has been married to Elizabeth Green for 31 years.

The couple has three daughters and three grandchildren.

Haynes is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Haynes works as a volunteer with senior citizens at the Delmont Service Center.

“I believe that your justice of the peace should be held to the highest standard,” Haynes said in his announcement.

Haynes said he has been a fair and compassionate person during his last three terms in office.
