Running for Office: Lafayette School Board District 3, Cobb
LAFAYETTE — Democrat Shelton J. Cobb is running for the District 3 seat on the Lafayette Parish School Board.
The seat was vacated by state Rep. Rickey Hardy who was elected last year to the state Legislature.
“I will work for the best interests of our children in mind,” Cobb said in a prepared statement.
The primary election will be held Oct. 4 with a runoff scheduled for Nov. 4 if needed.
Cobb said he was seeking office to protect the welfare of the children, ensure school and system improvements, work to provide teachers with all the tools necessary to provide quality educational experiences to students and to encourage parental and community involvement in schools.
Cobb spent eight years as a teacher in the system, worked for the state Department of Education in the Migrant and Indian Education Program and as a supervisor of the Veterans Education Program.
He has also worked in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System first as an assistant director and later as director of the Region IV Center until his retirement.
He has served on the boards of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, the Lafayette Housing Authority and the Lafayette Economic Development Authority. He serves on the S.M.I.L.E. board in Lafayette.
Cobb said his wife, Rebecca, is a retired elementary schoolteacher and his daughter, Christy, is a high school teacher.
“I am keenly aware of the issues facing our teachers, our students and our parents. I wish to continue my community service on the Lafayette Parish School Board.”
