Running for Office: Metro Council District 3, Pero
Rebecca Thompson Pero, a candidate for the Metro Council in District 3, said one of her top priorities, if elected, is to restore the quality of living in the Gardere Lane community.
“I live in District 3, and work in the area. The problems with this district are crime, infrastructure and traffic,” Pero said in a statement.
Pero is a Democrat, a real estate broker and business owner. She was a human resource manager for more than 28 years and has
been licensed to sell real estate since 1980.
Pero said she wants to work with the mayor to assure change and positive growth in District 3. “All people should be able to live and work in a safe and positive community,” she said.
“I will work closely with the Department of Public Works and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office to enhance the quality of life in this district. Public safety is very important to me, and I want to be that strong voice fighting for the concerns of the citizens,” Pero said.
Pero characterizes herself in her statement as a “no-nonsense advocate” who can get results.
Pero said successful long-term relationships, personal and business, are built on trust, mutual respect, impeccable ethics and getting details right the first time.
Pero, a motivational speaker, said she is affiliated with several community organizations including Sisters Supporting Sisters, Daughters of Zion and Executive Women International.
Pero, a longtime resident of the Gardere Lane community, is married to Randy J. Pero and a member of the New Zion Baptist Church.
Pero, 50, is running for office against two Republicans, M. Scott Wilson and Chandler Loupe, and fellow Democrat Merritt E. McDonald for the District 3 seat.
District 3 council member Pat Culbertson is not seeking re-election.
District 3 encompasses most of the southern part of the parish from Interstate 10 to River Road, including parts of Highland Road, Perkins Road, Burbank Drive and Nicholson Drive.
