Running for Office: Brown, Metro Council District 5
Johnnie M. Brown, a local schoolteacher who is running for Metro Council District 5, said she wants to focus on crime prevention and economic development.
Other key issues for Brown are early-childhood education and family-focused health education, she said in a statement.
“It is my desire to work with the mayor, seated officials and other community members to increase incoming revenue, to enhance community involvement and to foster neighborhood pride,” Brown said.
“It is with integrity and compassion that I plan to serve the district and build trust one home at a time.”
Brown, who has no party affiliation, faces Milton Lee, Herbert Pate, Ronnie Edwards and Thelma Ginn Brown, all Democrats, in the Oct. 4 primary.
District 5 covers areas primarily east and south of the Baton Rouge Metro Airport and includes areas along Airline Highway, Prescott Road and Joor Road.
The current District 5 council member is Charles Kelly, but he is prohibited from running again because of term limits.
“I have been privileged to work with youth who have little hope, but through visual arts, I have been able to inspire and challenge their lives,” she said.
Brown has been married for 40 years to Sidney Brown III and has four children and eight grandchildren.
