Milton Lee, a candidate for Metro Council District 5, said streets, drainage and recreation must be enhanced in East Baton Rouge Parish.

“This is a great community to live in, but there are things we need to improve,” Lee said in a statement.

Lee, a Democrat, said other key issues are eradicating drugs, reducing crime and improving schools.

“There are great schools in our district,” he said in the statement. “I will work with the school system to make our schools better.”

Lee faces Johnnie Brown, no party affiliation, and Thelma Ginn Brown, Ronnie Edwards, and Herbert A. Pate, all Democrats, in the Oct. 4 primary.

District 5 covers areas primarily east and south of the Baton Rouge Metro Airport and includes areas along Airline Highway, Prescott Road and Joor Road.

The District 5 council member is Charles Kelly, but he is prohibited from running again because of term limits.

Lee, a retired lab technician, said he has lived in the district for 25 years. He graduated from Northwestern High School, attended Southern University and graduated from Donaldson Real Estate School.

He is married to Leola Lee, who is a retired state employee, and is the father of two children, D’Angelo, who is a medical assistant, and Michelle, who is an engineer.

Lee is a member of the New Pilgrim Baptist Church. He worked as a DSM Copolymer lab technician for 38 years before retiring.

Lee served for 12 years on the parish’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, was a member of Local 216 Operating Engineers and served on the Democratic Party Parish Executive Committee for District 5.

Lee said he is also a member of the Capital City Golf Association and the Capital City Volleyball Association, as a referee. He also works as a BREC center supervisor.

Lee said he would be a “full-time councilman.”
