J.E. “Trae” Welch has announced his candidacy for Metro Council District 1.

District 1 currently is represented by Wayne Carter, who has announced he’ll be running for mayor.

District 1 covers the northern part of the parish including the cities of Baker and Zachary.

Welch, a Democrat, serves as the Zachary city prosecutor, runs a law practice in Zachary and is a former Baker councilman. His term on the city council ended June 30.

In addition, he and his wife Lynn own and operate the Jack and Jill’s Children Boutique in Zachary, according to Welch’s candidacy statement.

“We have an investment in the future of this parish. My wife and I are raising our 2-year-old son here. As Zachary city prosecutor, I have worked to keep our community safe and worked with the schools to tackle the tough issues of truancy,” Welch said in the statement.

With the different cities and communities included in District 1 from Pride to Baker, there are still many similarities in what the district needs for the future, Welch wrote.

“With growth comes the added stress on our safety providers. We must expand the fire, police, and EMS services throughout the district with additional stations and personnel. Drainage and sewerage improvements must be made to meet the immediate as well as the future needs of this area,” Welch wrote.

Welch is the son of former Metro Council members Duke and Roxson Welch.
