Running for Office: 1st Supreme Court District, Guidry
HARVEY — Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal Judge Greg Guidry, a former federal prosecutor and state district judge, is running for the Lousiana 1st Supreme Court District seat being vacated by retiring Chief Justice Pascal Calogero.
A Republican and native of Harvey in Jefferson Parish, Guidry attended LSU, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, and then attended LSU Law School where he was selected for Law Review and the Order of the Coif, honors based on academic achievement.
He studied for a year at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Upon returning to the U.S., he joined the New Orleans civil law firm of Liskow & Lewis where he was a member of the commercial litigation section. In 1989, he joined the Louisiana Attorney General’s legal team.
In 1990, Guidry began 10 years of service as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana, where he received commendations from the U.S. Attorney General, the director of the FBI, and the Chief Postal Inspector.
As a federal prosecutor, he served as a divisional chief overseeing violent crime and drug cases. He also was entrusted as the office’s ethics and professional responsibility counselor. In addition, he served as a legal adviser and trial advocacy instructor for the U.S. Department of Justice.
In 2000, he was elected judge in the 24th Judicial District Court for Jefferson Parish where he served for six years. In 2006, he won election to the state Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal.
Guidry is now an advisory board member for the New Orleans Federalist Society, the President of the Judge John C. Boutall American Inn of Court, the President of the Louisiana Fifth Circuit Judges Association, and a member of the Louisiana Bar Foundation.
Guidry served on the Board of Advisors for Catholic Charities, the Board of Directors for the Westwego Rotary Club, the Parish Council for Immaculate Conception Church, and the National Association of Assistant U.S. Attorneys.
He is married to the former Cathy Thompson, a nurse, and they have two children.
The First Supreme Court District includes all of St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes as well as parts of both Orleans and Jefferson parishes.
The primary election is Oct. 4. A runoff, if needed, will be Nov. 4.
The other two candidates in the race are Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal Roland Belsome, of New Orleans, and First Circuit Court of Appeal Judge “Jimmy” Kuhn, of Ponchatoula.
