Jindal endorses Jenkins for 6th District seat
Gov. Bobby Jindal joined the state Republican Party in its endorsement of Woody Jenkins for the 6th U.S. Congressional District seat.
State Republican Party Executive Director Bo Staples said Wednesday the party is working on getting more state leaders behind Jenkins’ name.
“Hopefully, it will help generate fundraising for the Jenkins campaign,” Staples said.
Jindal and other high-ranking Republicans — U.S. Sen. David Vitter, La., and U.S. Reps. Jim McCrery of Shreveport, Rodney Alexander of Quitman and Charles Boustany of Lafayette — also gave the nod to 1st U.S. Congressional District candidate and state Sen. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson.
Jenkins and Scalise are the Republican candidates on the May 3 ballot for the seats.
Jenkins, of Baton Rouge, will face Democratic candidate and state Rep. Don Cazayoux, D-New Roads. Three other candidates who are not affiliated with a major party also are standing election on May 3.
The three other candidates are Peter J. Aranyosi of Hammond, Ashley Casey of Baton Rouge and Randall T. Hayes of Winnfield.
The 6th Congressional District seat was vacated when former U.S. Rep. Richard Baker, R-Baton Rouge, resigned in February.
Staples said the National Republican Congressional Committee is also helping to raise money now, hoping to beat the great amount of financial support seen on the Democratic side.
In a news release from the state party office, Jindal said that Scalise and Jenkins, a former state representative, are strong conservatives who will be great advocates for Louisiana in Congress.
Jindal said in the release, “At a time when our delegation is experiencing turnover, it is more important than ever that our congressional members speak with one voice and that we clearly communicate the needs of our state as we continue to rebuild from the storms of 2005 and work to revamp our economy and workforce development system to make Louisiana the best place in the world to raise a family and get a great career.”
