Evangeline School Board updated on Pine Prairie freshmen program
VILLE PLATTE — The freshman class of Pine Prairie was the center of attention at Wednesday’s meeting of the Evangeline Parish School Board.
Pine Prairie High School Acting Principal Barbara Lee and members of her staff made a presentation of the school’s new 9th Grade Academy program to prepare freshman and parents for the high school experience.
Using funds from a $20,000 federal grant, the school began the new program this school term with the current class of freshmen.
The orientation meeting had 100 out of a possible 125 freshmen along with their parents attending. The students were given tours of the high school campus, information on clubs and sports, uniform policy and the positive behavior program. Parents were briefed about the school discipline and attendance handbook.
Freshmen are participating in a one semester careers program to set goals and make career choices.
In other action, Superintendent Toni Hamlin:
- Reminded the School Board and the public about the annual Title One Parent Empowerment and Community Involvement Day from 8:30 a.m. to noon today at the Ville Platte Civic Center.
- Announced there will be two H1N1 vaccination clinics for students in Pre-K to 12th grade from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Savoy Medical Arts Clinic in Mamou and at the Ville Platte Health Unit. Students were sent home with a packet of information about the vaccination clinic along with consent forms parents must fill out.
- Reported that there will be only one School Board meeting next month, on Dec. 9.
