ULL honors alumni during homecoming
LAFAYETTE — The University of Louisiana at Lafayette honored U.S. Reps. Charles Boustany and Charlie Melancon, as well as photographer Denis Reggie, as outstanding alumni during homecoming activities during the weekend.
The Outstanding Alumni award is the highest honor given by the ULL Alumni Association.
Boustany, R-Lafayette, was elected to Congress in 2004 after a 20-plus year career as a cardiovascular surgeon. He is a 1978 graduate of ULL.
Boustany is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees legislation on tax, trade, health-care and entitlement policy. He is the only Republican doctor on the committee.
Melancon, D-Napoleonville, was also elected to Congress in 2004, and serves as a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
Melancon graduated from ULL with a degree in agri-business.
Prior to his election to Congress, Melancon was president and general manager of American Sugar Cane.
A ULL graduate, who studied photography and business, Reggie is a world-acclaimed wedding photographer, who classifies his editorial style as “wedding photojournalism.”
His client list includes many celebrities. His portrait of his brother-in-law, the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy is featured on the cover of Kennedy’s memoir, “True Compass.”
A collection of his photographs will soon join the permanent collection at the National Museum of American History.
