Lanier principal quits for ‘personal reasons’
Citing personal reasons, Lanier Elementary School Principal Afreda Hygh resigned Friday, according to a news release.
On Monday, Assistant Principal William Crowe will take over as interim principal, said the release sent out Friday by the nonprofit group Advance Baton Rouge.
An ABR spokesman would not elaborate on the reasons for Hygh’s abrupt resignation.
She could not be reached for comment late Friday afternoon.
Hygh was one of five new principals hired by ABR in June. ABR operates five public schools previously taken over by the state for low academic performance.
Hygh previously worked at Capitol High School in Baton Rouge and worked much of her career in New Orleans, once being named middle-school teacher of the year.
“Ms. Hygh’s presence will be missed,” said Henry “Hank” Shepard, chief executive officer of the group. “It’s unfortunate, but we must continue educating our students.”
Shepard said he’s confident that Crowe, whom he described as a veteran educator and administrator, will do well until a new principal can be found.
Letters explaining the change will be sent home with students Monday.
The search to replace Hygh is expected to take no more than 30 days. Applicants can apply through the ABR Web site, http://www.advancebr.org.
