LAFAYETTE — The school district’s top teachers were honored during Wednesday’s School Board meeting.
The teachers were selected by their respective schools in February.
Parish-level winners are Alanna Guillot, of Milton Elementary; Holly Boffy, Paul Breaux Middle; and Stephanie Bennett, Acadiana High School.
Boffy was selected as the Louisiana Teacher of the Year this summer.
Boffy grew emotional as she told her fellow teachers that while she’s attended many ceremonies since her state recognition, Wednesday’s ceremony was most special because she shared the honor with those who will one day teach her own son.
“Thank you for all you do for the parish. You truly are appreciated,” Boffy told her fellow teachers.
During the meeting, board members and staff credited all the district’s teachers for their role in the district’s improved performance scores.
The scores were released by the Louisiana Department of Education earlier this month.
The scores measure district and individual school performance based on several factors, including standardized test scores, attendance and drop-out rates.
The district’s overall performance score increased by nearly 5 points from 91.5 to 96.1 this year.
For the first time since 2005, two schools in the district reached four-star performance status, said Mike Babineaux, the district’s No Child Left Behind specialist.
Schools earn a four-star rating for performance scores 120 or above.
The Louisiana Department of Education set a statewide goal to move all schools to scores of 120 by 2014.
