Lafayette Education Briefs for Oct. 14, 2009
The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced the names of 15 Acadiana-area students among the 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in its 55th annual scholarship program.
The semifinalists are in competition for $2,500 National Merit scholarships. The finalists will be announced between April and July.
Semifinalists are selected based on their 2008 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test scores.
They represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the United States and are representative of the highest-scoring entrants in their respective states.
Acadiana area semifinalists include:
- Episcopal School of Acadiana: Lea A. Hair.
- Acadiana High School: Alex D. Richard.
- Lafayette High School: Helen M. Brumley, Daniel L. Comeaux, Joanna E. LaPucha, Khang V. Mai, Taylor S. Orr, Gregory Salts, Daniel J. Smith, and Jing Zhang.
- St. Thomas More: Zachary C. Comeaux, Nicholas C. Suellentrop.
- Teurlings Catholic: Jules W. Guidry.
- Catholic High School (New Iberia): John D. Lassalle.
- New Iberia Senior High: Aaron D. Moore.
St. Thomas More sets homecoming
St. Thomas More Catholic High School will honor its alumni from the classes of 1984, 1989 and 1999 during homecoming activities Oct. 29-30.
At 7 p.m. Oct. 29, a football alumni dinner will be held at the Schilling Shack. All former coaches and players are invited for dinner, drinks, and football memories. RSVP to melanielauer@stmcougars.com by Oct. 23.
Events on Oct. 30 lead up to the Cougars’ game against Carencro High at 7 p.m. The day starts with a Mass at 8:15 a.m. in the school mall with guest speaker Ben Berthelot, Class of 1994. A pep rally at 12:30 p.m. will be held in the Cougardome followed by tailgating at 5:30 p.m.
