School property bid less than minimum
LAFAYETTE — Only one bid was submitted for Pecan Island School, but it is $500,000 less than what the Vermilion Parish school system wants.
The sole bid of $250,000 was entered by John Properties, LLC — registered to David and Peter John, of Crowley, according to the state’s corporation database. The brothers own JohnPac, a bag manufacturing plant in Crowley.
The minimum acceptable bid for the 39,000-square-foot building was $750,000. The school includes an indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool, outdoor track and separate shop space.
It’s against the law for state-owned property to be sold below value.
“We think the property is worth that,” said Phil Sellers, chief financial officer for Vermilion Parish schools.
It’s likely the bid process will start again, but that decision is left up to the School Board, Sellers said.
The school has been closed since Hurricane Rita in 2005. While the building, which sits on a ridge in the coastal community, did not flood, it did receive roof damage. Work to remove mold and mildew and other repairs were made.
Before Rita, the school served about 50 students. That number dwindled to 15, making it economically unfeasible to reopen the school, Superintendent Randy Schexnayder said.
The School Board decided to place proceeds from the sale into a trust fund earmarked for capital outlay projects.
