WBR board OKs school roof, gym work
PORT ALLEN — The West Baton Rouge School Board on Wednesday approved a number of building repairs and improvements.
School Board members voted to authorize a contractor to install waterproof sealants and insulating coating on the metal roofs at Brusly High, Devall Middle and Port Allen High schools at a combined cost of $71,198.
Superintendent David Corona said 10-year warranties had lapsed on the three roofs and the move to repair them was made Wednesday to guard against potentially costlier repairs down the road if the roofs were to start leaking.
All repairs to the roofs will carry new 10-year warranties, he said.
The School Board also voted to redo Brusly High School’s gym floor at a cost of $19,910.
In addition, gymnasium floors at Brusly Middle, Port Allen Middle and Port Allen High schools will get fresh recoatings at a cost of $5,089, Corona said.
In other business, the School Board voted to purchase a modular or portable building to house the parish’s Early Childhood program at Brusly Elementary School.
Corona said he expects the price of the portable building to come in under $100,000.
The School Board also decided to defer a vote on rolling millage rates forward until the School Board’s July 15 meeting.
Board members Cecile Gauthreaux, Paul Pattan Sr. and Alden Chustz Jr. were absent from the meeting.
As a result, Corona said, the remaining board members agreed to delay the vote until July to get the full board’s input and also to give parish Assessor Barney “Frog” Altazan an opportunity to address the board.
