Lafayette principal finalist for honor
LAFAYETTE — Dana Schmersahl, principal of J. Wallace James Elementary School, is one of 21 principals across the state named as a finalist for the state department of education’s principal of the year honor.

Schmersahl was selected as one of seven finalists at the elementary level. J. Wallace James is Lafayette Parish’s Arts and Technology Academy.

The regional finalists at the middle and high school level are St. Landry Parish school administrators are Stella L. Thomas, Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts in Opelousas at the middle school level and William E. Duplechain, Port Barre High School in Port Barre.

Elementary, middle and high school level winners, as well as the overall principal of the year honoree will be announced next month.

Tourney raises funds for ULL solar team
LAFAYETTE — The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s BeauSoleil Louisiana Solar Home team’s Golf For BeauSoleil fundraiser is Friday at Acadian Hills Country Club.

The event will help the team with expenses involved in its journey to Washington, D.C., in late September for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2009 Solar Decathlon.

The ULL School of Architecture and Design team was selected as one of 20 postsecondary design teams from across the world to compete in the  competition.

LTC offers free call center training
LAFAYETTE — The Louisiana Technical College-Lafayette will offer a tuition-free call center/customer service representative training program July 6-Aug. 14.

The 180 hour, non-credit program will be offered on Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Space is available for 15 participants. The program is tuition-free, but participants are responsible for books, supplies, and testing fees.

The training is made available through the state’s Rapid Response Training grant program.

Individuals interested in enrolling in this program should call (337) 262-5962, ext. 147 or visit the Lafayette campus to fill out an application.
