ULL holds meeting on disaster mitigation
LAFAYETTE — Meetings designed to assist the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in developing a hazard mitigation plan continue at 2 p.m. Monday at Abdalla Hall.
The university received a Disaster Resistant University grant administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
An initial public meeting in April helped identify potential hazards the campus may face.
Monday’s meeting will focus on the results of a risk assessment and brainstorming mitigation goals and objectives, including the identification of projects that could help reduce the risk of loss of life, injury and property damage.
The project is under the direction of ULL’s National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Institute. The project team includes the national disaster mitigation and management firm, James Lee Witt Associates, as a consultant.
Hurricanes and other natural disasters, as well as other potential calamities such as violence and lab accidents, will be considered in the plan.
The university’s plan will also involve a 3-D model of the university to allow campus officials to pinpoint impacted areas of campus and easily account for the number of people and assets affected at any given time.
The university was awarded $157,500 from FEMA to begin the process.
Once the university has a FEMA-approved hazard mitigation plan, it will be eligible for federal funding to help implement some of the strategies.
Abdalla Hall is in the ULL Research Park at 635 Cajundome Blvd.
