Pastorek’s salaries explanation satisfies former BESE head
A member of the state’s top school board said Friday that she is content with the superintendent’s explanation of salaries at the state Department of Education.
“I am satisfied with that,” said Linda Johnson of Plaquemine, a member of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and until recently president of the panel.
State Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek said in an e-mail Thursday to Johnson and others that 14 unclassified jobs have been created during his 18 months on the job, including five who are paid at least $100,000 per year.
Unclassified jobs are at-will positions that serve at Pastorek’s pleasure. They do not enjoy Civil Service protection like most state workers.
Johnson said earlier that she and other board members were concerned about high salaries in the Education Department.
Pastorek said that, while he prefers a lean organization, the hirings stem from education initiatives sought by the 11-member board.
Dale Bayard of Sulphur, another board member and one who backed Johnson’s request, said Friday he has not had time to review Pastorek’s explanation.
