VILLE PLATTE — Superintendent Toni Hamlin reminded Evangeline Parish School Board members at a meeting Wednesday night of the court hearing in U.S. District Court scheduled Dec. 15.

The hearing will discuss the fate of Ville Platte High School.

The U.S. Justice Department is pushing to have the school closed and its 400 students bused to Pine Prairie High School. Justice maintains the school building that holds a black majority student population is not adequate compared with other public school facilities in the parish.

The board has attempted three times in just over a year to have voters pass a bond issue to fund the construction of a new Ville Platte High with no success.

Prior to the last election, on Nov. 4, the board was ordered to prepare a student reassignment plan in the event the school is closed before the next school year.

The board’s plan calls for transferring students between Pine Prairie and Mamou High schools.

Hamlin reminded members that they are required to attend the morning session of the 10 a.m. hearing in federal court in Lafayette. She said she expects the hearing to last between two and three days.

Hamlin also announced that the federal court has a hearing with St. Landry Parish school officials the same week.

All schools in the parish will be closed next week for the Thanksgiving break. Schools will resume class Dec. 1 for three weeks before dismissing for the Christmas break.

In other action during the  meeting, the board approved changing the date of its only December meeting to Dec. 10.
