BR meningitis alert issued at two schools
The East Baton Rouge Parish school system alerted parents Tuesday at Istrouma High School and the East Baton Rouge Laboratory Academy via letter and automated phone calls about a possible case of bacterial meningitis.
The school system activated the alert after learning Tuesday that a student at a third school, Prescott Middle School, was receiving treatment at a local hospital for a suspected but unconfirmed case of bacterial meningitis.
The student had contact this weekend with a student from Istrouma High School and another student from EBR Lab, which is housed in the same building as Istrouma, spokesman Chris Trahan said.
The school system is coordinating its efforts with the state Office of Public Health.
Common symptoms of bacterial meningitis include high fever, headache and stiff neck, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Those signs, however, are similar to symptoms for the flu. The only way to confirm the diagnosis is to conduct a spinal tap.
