Desegregation plan to be unveiled today
OPELOUSAS — A proposed school reorganization plan to help resolve desegregation issues in St. Landry Parish is scheduled to be made public today at a special School Board meeting.
The proposed reorganization plan will be presented at a special meeting called for 4 p.m. today at the School Board offices on Creswell Lane.
Public comment will be accepted on the plan.
The plan, crafted by a committee of residents appointed by U.S. District Judge Tucker Melancon, is expected to call for the closure and consolidation of some schools.
The U.S. Justice Department has tentatively approved the reorganization plan and delivered it this month to Superintendent Michael Nassif.
Melancon ordered the superintendent not to reveal the details — even to board members — before presenting the plan at a public meeting.
The School Board has about three months to either accept the proposed reorganization plan as is, tweak it or develop an alternative plan.
Any alternative plan or changes to the existing plan would most likely have to go back to the Justice Department for review.
The School Board is working to meet desegregation guidelines on the quality of education for each student, the quality of the facilities, staffing and student assignment in a case that has been pending since the 1960s.
