Dementia training

Alzheimer’s Services and the LSU Life Course and Aging Center will present “Dementia Care Training” 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday at Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area at 3772 North Blvd.

The Louisiana Legislature passed Act 571 in 2008, which requires staff training in dementia care in adult residential care facilities and nursing facilities. The training will provide participants with a curriculum developed by professionals in dementia care and scientific research in aging populations.

Fees for the training are eligible for funding through the Louisiana Incumbent Workers Act and the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

Neurosurgery clinic

The NeuroMedical Center Clinic is opening a Neurosurgery Satellite Clinic on Wednesday at 10292 Gould Drive in St. Francisville.

Adult and pediatric neurosurgeon Scott W. Soleau, of The NeuroMedical Center Clinic in Baton Rouge, will see neurosurgery patients at the new location twice a month.

Nano-Rid office

Nano-Rid LLC has opened its corporate office at 3915 O’Neal Lane.

Partners are Jack Barlow, chief executive officer, and Nick Thibodeaux, chief financial officer.

Nano-Rid markets an antimicrobial green product that it says penetrates and bonds to surfaces to combat potentially dangerous disease-causing bacteria, molds, fungi and superbags such as H1N1.

It’s targeting hospitals, food processing plants, churches, schools, restaurants, sports facilities, spas, transport vehicles and ambulances.

Economic courses

The Louisiana Industrial Development Executives Association will present an Economic Development Certification Program designed for economic development professionals, chamber of commerce staff, elected officials and local civic leaders.

The certification is a three-year program, with four core courses and two electives.

Core courses include the basic economic development course; business retention and expansion; marketing and business recruitment; and real estate development and reuse.

The basic economic development course will be taught Feb. 23-26 at the Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives at 10725 Airline Highway.

The cost is $520 for LIDEA members and $670 for nonmembers.

Company acquired

Providence Engineering has acquired Houma-based GSE Associates, formerly known as Gulf-South Engineers.

GSE provides architectural, engineering, planning and surveying services on civil works projects, surveying services and construction administration.

Arthur DeFraites, owner of GSE for 56 years, will remain as senior managing partner.

Housing assistance

Twenty low-income families in East Baton Parish will get help with closing costs and down payments through a $200,000 Federal Home Loan of Bank of Dallas grant program overseen by Habitat For Humanity.

Whitney National Bank is participating in the collaborative effort.

Prospective homeowners are identified by Habitat for Humanity, and after receiving homebuyer training and credit counseling, the families can access the grant money for the purchase of their home.

Lead certification

The LSU AgCenter has scheduled training sessions to certify contractors, painters and others renovating pre-1978 buildings that may contain lead-based paint.

Claudette Reichel, LSU AgCenter housing specialist, said that workers will have to be certified after April 22 to do this work under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule.

Reichel said first of the seven classes will be 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in Baton Rouge at the LSU AgCenter’s LaHouse, 2800 Gourrier Ave., near the LSU baseball stadium. The class includes eight hours of training and a certification test.

The other classes will be held at the same time and place March 2, April 13 and April 27.

The classes in Lafayette will be March 4 and March 24 at the Acadian Home Builders Association, 135 N. Domingue Road.

SU symposium

The Southern University Law Center’s Journal of Race, Gender, and Poverty will host a one-day symposium, “State of the Union: The Progress Report” 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 19 in rooms 120 and 130 in A.A. Lenoir Hall.

The free event will feature legal scholars and academics discussing civil rights topics, with the goal of assisting in identifying remedies to community problems.

The luncheon keynote speaker will be Peniel E. Joseph, author and professor of history at Tufts University.
