Fisker still examining U.S. auto sites

Before Louisiana economic development officials revealed V-Vehicle Co., a San Diego startup, as the automaker who’ll occupy a more than 700,000-square-foot plant in Monroe, speculation fixed on Fisker Automotive Inc. as the potential occupant.

The reason? A famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, had invested in Fisker, and KPCB had been publicly identified by northeast Louisiana leaders as an investor in the Monroe project.

KPCB, it turns out, had backed V-Vehicle in stealth mode, said state economic development Secretary Stephen Moret. Meanwhile, Fisker continues to ramp up plans to produce a green plug-in hybrid, premium sports car in 2010, one that will sell for $87,500 and get 100 mpg while running entirely on electricity for the first 50 miles.

Russell Datz, a Fisker spokesman, said initial models will be built in Finland, where the Porsche Boxster and Cayman models continue to be built through 2011 before the Porsche production moves to Austria.

Fisker has more green car models planned and will be searching for a U.S. automotive plant site a year from now, Datz said. Fisker hasn’t indicated a site preference.

Meanwhile, Louisiana will be attempting to fill the GM Shreveport plant with new automotive production as assembly of Chevrolet and GMC trucks ends there in 2012.
