N.O. on hot-cities list for young workers
New Orleans ranked 10th on a list of the hottest cities for attracting young professional talent, but Baton Rouge and Lafayette were snubbed.
Next Generation Consulting, a work force development group based in Madison, Wis., compiled three lists of “Mighty Micros (200,000 population and under),” “Midsized Magnets (200,000 to 500,000)” and “Super Cities (more than 500,000).
Twenty cities made each list, and New Orleans landed at No. 10 in the middle list, which was topped by Madison.
Richmond, Va. — visited in March by Baton Rouge Area Chamber leaders — landed at No. 19 on the Mighty Micros list, which was topped by Fort Collins, Colo.
San Francisco topped the Super Cities list, one populated by other cities the BRAC Canvas Workshop has visited: Austin, Texas, at No. 6; Portland, Ore., at No. 8; and Nashville, Tenn., at No. 14.
Dubbed “The 60 U.S. Hotspots for Young, Talented Workers,” the study created seven major value indexes: cost of lifestyle; earnings; vitality (measures of residents’ health, air and water quality and green space); after-hours (entertainment strengths); learning; around town (a transportation quotient); and social capital (a measure of diversity, crime rates, voter participation and percentage of minority- and women-owned businesses).
