Steel plant to expand northeast of BR
Southland Steel Fabricators will expand its Greensburg facility in a move that will maintain 141 jobs and create 35 new ones with an average salary of $36,000, company and state officials said.
The facility will expand by 50,400 square feet and add a 32,000-square-foot building, part of a $1.5 million capital expansion announced this morning in St. Helena Parish.
Southland’s expansion includes $400,000 worth of equipment for a new paint shop.
Gov. Bobby Jindal and Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret were on hand for the announcement, touting the expansion as a vote of confidence in the Louisiana economy amid a national meltdown.
Construction is expected to begin immediately, with completion scheduled for early 2010. The company has applied for the state’s Quality Jobs Program and Industrial Tax Exemption Program. Southland Steel will also tap the Economic Development Loan Opportunity Program.
Founded in 1986, Southland Steel Fabricators Inc. has headquarters and fabrication facilities in Greensburg. The company’s services include structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication for the industrial and heavy commercial markets. Southland also has a secondary product line for telecommunication and telephone monopoles.
