Stephen C. McGuire, chairman of Southern University’s Department of Physics, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. McGuire was elected in recognition of his leadership in exploring new ways for research physicists, traditional educators and museum professionals to work engage students and the public, particularly underrepresented groups, in physics. Each year, no more than one  half of 1 percent of society members are recognized by their peers for elections to the status of Fellow in APS. 

Randall Boughton, Trey Williams and  Bill Simon of Latter and Blum Commercial Real Estate have been awarded the Certified Investment Member designation by the CCIM Institute.  The CCIM designation is awarded to commercial real estate professionals upon successful completion of a graduate-level education curriculum and presentation of a portfolio of qualifying industry experience.  The Chicago based CCIM Institute is an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. 

Pamela Egan has become board certified in Anti-Aging and Functional Medicine through the American Academy of Anti-Aging, in affiliation with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in Louisiana. Egan, of Covington, met fellowship course requirements, clinical intensives, and board exams in order to be certified. Egan is a board-certified adult and family nurse practitioner, clinical specialist in gerontology/mental health and certified diabetes educator. She is also a member of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s Louisiana Women’s Policy and Research Commision. 

The LSU AgCenter and the Southern University AgCenter have recognized individuals and teams of faculty members for outstanding service. Two additional awards were given to staff members for exemplary performance of their duties at the LSU AgCenter. The top individual awards for LSU AgCenter extension faculty members went to LSU AgCenter wildlife and forestry specialist Don Reed and county agent Stuart Gauthier from Vermilion Parish. Top individual award winners for research faculty went to AgCenter animal scientist Kayanush Aryana and plant pathologist Chris Clark. For the Southern University AgCenter, the top individual extension award winner was specialist Kasundra Cyrus. The top individual research winner was animal scientist Sebhatu Gebrelul. Recipients of the LSU AgCenter team awards were scientists involved in nutrition research, and family and nutrition program and horticulture agents who created community gardening program. The winner of the Southern University AgCenter mini-grant team award went to specialists who managed a program aimed at improving the lives of at risk youth. Excellence in Extension Award: Don Reed, a wildlife and forestry specialist at the LSU AgCenter’s Bob R. Jones Idlewild Research Station near Clinton. Reed was recognized for the programs he does with landowners in improving their property for wildlife enhancement. Floyd S. Edmiston Extension Award: Stuart Gauthier, LSU AgCenter county agent in Vermilion Parish, was recognized for his work in assessing agricultural-related issues after hurricanes Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008. Rogers Excellence in Research Award: Kayanush Aryana, associate professor in the LSU AgCenter School of Animal Sciences, was recognized for his research with functional dairy products.   Doyle Chambers Research Award: Chris Clark, professor in the LSU AgCenter Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology was praised for his research with sweet potatoes. Global Excellence Award in Grantsmanship (Extension):  Kasundra Cyrus, extension specialist with the Southern University AgCenter, received this award for her proficiency in grant writing. She is project director for the Parents Preparing for Success program. Global Excellence Award in Scholarship (Research): . Sebhatu Gebrelul, a professor in the sustainable plant and animal production program at the Southern University AgCenter, was acknowledged for research in developing a meat identification software program and the development of material related to goat breeding, care and management, nutrition and health and reproduction. Tipton Team Research Award: the LSU AgCenter’s resistant starch team, consisting of members representing both nutrition and health research, the team focused on how an increased diet of resistant starch can have positive effects on issues related to the reduction of body fat, improved glucose tolerance and the prevention of cancer. The team members are: Kayanush Aryana, associate professor, School of Animal Sciences; Chang-Ho Chung, assistant professor, Audubon Sugar Institute;  Donal Day, professor, Audubon Sugar Institute; Marlene Janes, associate professor, Department of Food Science; Mike Keenan, associate professor, School of Human Ecology; Joan King, associate professor, Department of Food Science; Don Labonte, professor, School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences; Jack Losso, associate professor, Department of Food Science Kathy McCutcheon, research associate, School of Human Ecology; David Picha, professor, School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences; and Richard Tulley, professor, School of Human Ecology. Southern University AgCenter Mini-Grant Award: Recipients of this award were recognized for their efforts in deterring youth from engaging in risky behavior and empower them to make safer decisions. Team members are: Keydron Guinn, Edna Lastrapes and Lavonya Malveaux from the Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives; Donna Badon, Fatemah Malekian and Oscar Udoh of the Southern University AgCenter; and Chris Robichaux from St. Martin Parish. Outstanding Service Award for Associates: Clark Robertson, research associate in the LSU AgCenter’s Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology, is involved in diagnosing problems with issues related to soybeans including a fungicide research experiment.
