Shaw Group promotes Graphia
Lawyer to oversee major operations
Gary Graphia, who came to The Shaw Group Inc. as a corporate attorney nearly a decade ago, has been named chief operating officer of the $7 billion-a-year company.
Graphia, 46, has served Shaw as general counsel, chief legal officer and corporate secretary and, most recently, as executive vice president of corporate development and strategy. With the promotion, Graphia adds COO administrative duties to his role as an executive vice president.
In 2006, Graphia played a key role in helping Shaw acquire 20 percent of the nuclear reactor firm, Westinghouse Electric Co., in a complex transaction that saw Toshiba Corp. acquire a majority stake.
Graphia also advised the company in acquisitions of Stone & Webster in 2000 and the IT Group in 2002.
Graphia, who previously oversaw the company’s capital, sales and marketing, corporate communications, strategic markets, risk management, safety and quality control efforts, will continue to report to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jim Bernhard but will oversee Shaw’s major operating segments now. They are fossil and nuclear plant construction in the Power Group; the maintenance division in the Power Group; Energy & Chemicals; Fabrication & Manufacturing; and Environmental & Infrastructure.
Former Shaw President Tim Barfield, who now heads the Louisiana Workforce Commission, once held those duties before he left the company in late 2006.
The company’s structure was reorganized then, with the head of each operating segment reporting to Bernhard and with Bernhard assuming the title of president, in addition to chairman and CEO.
