Storms hurt N.O.’s passenger numbers
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Passenger levels at Louisiana’s largest commercial airport were down sharply in September because of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
Statistics released Wednesday show 30 percent fewer passengers arrived at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport than in September 2007.
Airport spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut says that while September is typically a slower month overall, the storms made matters worse.
Gustav, which forced the evacuation of the city and south Louisiana before it made landfall on Labor Day, temporarily closed the airport to commercial flights.
