Blue Bayou plans camp site
Dixie Landin’/Blue Bayou, the Highland Road amusement and water park, plans a major expansion on the opposite side of Highland Road that includes a new campground, according to environmental filings.
Permit documents filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers earlier this month show the park would add a large L- shaped tract behind Home Depot on the west side of Highland.
Dixie Landin’ operates at Old Perkins Road and Highland.
Extra parking space already is available on the opposite side of Highland between Interstate 10 and Home Depot.
An elevated bridge allows patrons to cross Highland to reach the park.
Permit documents show the area just north of Home Depot would offer more amusement rides, a roller coaster and a food court.
A larger tract extending at a right angle toward the northeast would become more parking and a proposed campground.
Elizabeth Haynes Harrison, director of marketing and entertainment for Dixie Landin’, confirmed Thursday that permits had been filed.
She declined to elaborate on details, other than the site work would allow future expansion and that plans include a “destination campground.”
Owned by Sam B. Haynes Jr., Dixie Landin’ opened in 1999, built with several amusement rides Haynes had offered at the old Fun Fair Park on Airline Highway.
Blue Bayou Water Park offers several water slides and swimming areas.
In addition, the park has expanded its offerings by hosting concert performances, especially country- and Christian-music artists, as well as younger performers who appear on Disney’s cable TV channel.
