Disaster recovery centers added
The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has added Disaster Recovery Centers in Clinton, Rayne and Winnsboro to help residents affected by hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

In Clinton, the center is at the temporary courthouse at 9414 Plank Road. The Rayne center is at The Green Room at 318 Gossen Memorial Drive. In Winnsboro, it’s located in the Old Commodities Building at 706 Prairie St.

The centers are open seven days a week, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Disaster Recovery Center staff provide registration information for disaster assistance and hazard mitigation, help with disaster loan applications and provide information and contacts for other programs. Homeowners, renters and business owners affected by hurricanes Gustav and Ike also can call the registration line at (800) 621-3362. Applicants can register at http://www.fema.gov.

Residents are encouraged to register prior to visiting a Disaster Recovery Center. Officials also said affected residents who have already filled out damage report forms with the state, parish emergency managers or voluntary agencies must register with FEMA to be considered for federal assistance.

IEM to develop warning system
IEM, the Baton Rouge risk management company, has added to its military contract work, garnering a $2.3 million job from the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency to develop a warning system for communities near military weapons stockpiles in eight U.S. states.

IEM said that under the contract, it will enhance an existing software system it created that will warn nearby communities if an accident occurs at Army bases that store or dispose of chemical weapons.
