The Center for Planning Excellence is offering 10 scholarships at $1,000 each to send Louisiana elected officials to a smart growth conference in Albuquerque, N.M., in January.

Applicants must be locally elected officials in Louisiana and must demonstrate a commitment to learning more about smart growth principles and how to implement them in their communities. The scholarships do not extend to members of an elected official's staff.

The three-day conference, “New Partners for Smart Growth: Building Safe, Healthy and Livable Communities Conference,” will help attendees learn about the latest research, plan implementation tools and techniques, model projects, planning best practices and policies and codes. The event will offer elected officials the opportunity to network and coordinate with their peers and planning experts from across the country.

All applications must include a one- to two-page letter describing the elected official’s interest in the conference and outlining any current or future plans for community planning and implementation of smart growth tenets.

CPEX must receive applications by 4 p.m. on Oct. 24. For more details on application requirements, visit www.planningexcellence.org.
