BizTech Expo set

The 26th annual BizTech Expo will be held Oct. 8-9 at the Baton Rouge River Center.

The Expo, produced by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report, will include more than 200 booths. Opportunities for networking and demonstrations of new technologies and business services will be available. 

Business Report’s Top 100 Luncheon will be held at the expo at 11:45 a.m. Oct. 8. CEOs from Baton Rouge’s 100 largest private companies will be honored and economist Loren Scott will unveil his 2009-2010 economic trends forecast for Baton Rouge and Louisiana.

Participating exhibitors will present seminars and workshops both days.

The Louisiana Leadership Symposium, featuring five influential leaders in state government, will be held Oct. 9 at the Expo.

General tickets are $15, the Top 100 Luncheon is $45 and the Leadership Symposium is $20.

IEM gets contract

IEM, a provider of homeland security and emergency management services, has been selected by FEMA to help the federal, state and local government prepare for transporting people forced to relocate during natural disasters or acts of terrorism.

Under the $9 million, multiyear contract, IEM will support FEMA in developing a national transportation strategy and operational transportation plans for mass evacuations.

New bank branch

Fidelity Homestead Savings Bank is opening its new Hammond branch at 500 C.M. Fagan Drive, adjacent to the Hammond Square Mall. The branch will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Heading the Hammond branch are vice president and Northshore retail manager Glenn Geddis, branch operations manager Stephanie Fos, retail branch manager Angela DiFranco, personal banker Karen Smith, loan executive Juliette Carmo and loan processor Jan Smith.

Recovery Center 

The Cenikor Foundation of Baton Rouge will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of its new Women’s Wing Recovery Center at 10 a.m. Thursday, at 2414 Bunker Hill Drive.

Piling contract

Group Contractors, a subsidiary of Baton Rouge-based Group Industries, has been awarded a $4.2 million contract for piling work on the new Woman’s Hospital being constructed on Airline Highway.

The project entails driving 1,688 concrete piles. The work began this month and will be completed in December.

Apartments open

Indigo Park Apartment Homes has opened a 330-unit community at 11959 Nicholson Drive north of Bluebonnet Boulevard.

The development features historically inspired homes in a park setting and offers one-, two- and three-bedroom plans. Rent payments vary between $780 and $1,600 depending on the floor plan and location.

Syngenta honored

The Manufacturing Extension Partnership of Louisiana, a University of Louisiana at Lafayette program, has awarded its Platinum Award For Continued Excellence to Syngenta.

The award recognizes excellence in Louisiana manufacturers through leadership and successful transformation throughout people, process and organization.

The St. Gabriel Syngenta facility manufactures the active ingredients atrazine and benoxacor and formulates Touchdown, Karate and Halex GT brands, among other products, for the agricultural sector.

Workshop scheduled

A two-day hazardous materials transportation certification workshop will be held Sept. 18-19 at the Holiday Inn South, 9940 Airline Highway in Baton Rouge.

The workshop will cover the federal hazardous materials transportation regulations, including classification, communication and security.

Attendance costs $695 per person and group discounts are available. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. The workshop ends at 4:30 p.m.

Maginnis to speak

LaPolitics Weekly’s John Maginnis will be the keynote speaker at the Louisiana Department of Insurance’s 12th annual Health Care Conference, set for Sept. 3 at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center.

Insurance legislation

State Sen. Donald Cravins Jr. and state Rep. Charles Kleckley will discuss insurance legislation that passed in the 2008 regular Legislative session. Home workshop set

The Capital Region Builders Association is hosting a workshop next week on remodeling aging residents’ homes to maintain their independence.

Employment rules

The Louisiana Workforce Commission is reminding minors, parents and employers of the employment rules for 14- to 16-year-olds during the school year.

It is illegal for 14- and 15-year-olds to work between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. before the start of any school day and between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. on any other day. It’s also illegal for 16-year-olds to work beyond 11 p.m. on school nights; 17-year-olds cannot work after midnight.

When school is in session, 14- and 15-year-olds can’t work more than three hours a day, Mondays through Fridays, and more than 18 hours a week.
