State: La. wages rose 7% in 2007
Job-related income rose an average 7.5 percent for Louisiana workers last year, according to a state report on fourth-quarter 2007 employment and wages.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission publishes the data each quarter, examining trends in worker compensation. Wages in fourth-quarter 2007 increased 7.5 percent from the fourth quarter 2006, the commission reported.
Compared to the third-quarter 2007, wages rose 11 percent — but the fourth quarter number usually is skewed by year-end bonuses, the commission said. The average weekly wage in Louisiana across all industry sectors was $783.
In the 11-parish regional labor market area that includes Baton Rouge, the average wage for the fourth quarter was $778. Professional and technical services paid best ($1,249), followed by manufacturing ($1,244). Retail trade wages averaged the least at $464 a week.
In the 10-parish regional labor market area that includes Lafayette, fourth-quarter wages averaged $804. Mining (which includes oil and gas) led that market area with $1,456 a week, followed by management of companies and enterprises at $1,344. Arts, entertainment and recreation brought up the rear at $359 a week.
