BR job productivity highest in nation
The Baton Rouge region’s worker productivity growth is the highest in the nation, according to the Brookings Institution research group.
Brookings’ findings cover the five years leading up to Hurricane Katrina in “Metro Policy: Shaping a New Federal Partnership for a Metropolitan Nation.” The think tank examined gross domestic product in the 100 largest metro areas and compared that with the number of jobs in each area.
The Baton Rouge 5.08 percent annual growth rate in GDP per job topped that of all other metro areas and was far above the national average growth rate of 2.26 percent, Brookings said.
“As we work together to diversify our economy and focus on attracting high-tech, digital media and other quality jobs, the national rankings reflect our accomplishments, which in turn attracts even more growth,” Mayor-President Kip Holden said in a statement released by the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.
BRAC’s chief executive, Adam Knapp, said the Brookings research would reinforce the chamber’s business development efforts in marketing Baton Rouge to prospects.
Trailing Baton Rouge in second and third place were San Jose, Calif., and Sarasota, Fla.
