Barbara West Carpenter has been named Local Commissioner Of The Year by the Louisiana Housing Council. She is dean of the Southern University Center for International Education and director of continuing education and service learning. 

Dr. Rani Whitfield, a Baton Rouge family physician, has been presented the 2008 Award Of Meritorious Achievement by the American Heart Association. Whitfield was recognized for his contribution to the association’s awareness and commitment to minority programs. 

Dr. Trent James, an internist at Baton Rouge Family Medical Center, and Brenda Brown, a registered nurse at Baton Rouge General Medical Center, have received the “Bonne Coeur” Award from Volunteer Health Corps of Baton Rouge. The corps is a nonprofit group of medical volunteers who provide health care to the underserved in the community. James and Brown were recognized because they recruited many others to join Volunteer Health Corps. 

Special Olympics Louisiana has selected Advocate columnist Smiley Anders as recipient of the Outstanding Media-Print Award for his support of the Special Olympics and to recognize his generosity to other nonprofits in providing coverage of their events. 

The Our Lady of the Lake marketing team earned top honors at the annual Aster Awards and additional recognition at the annual health-care advertising awards. On the local level, the team was recognized with several Gordon & Breaux Pelican Awards. For the Aster Awards, OLOL was presented with the Judge’s Choice Award for the internal publication “A Tribute to Leadership.” For the 25th annual healthcare advertising awards, the team earned two bronze awards, one silver award and three certificates of merit.The Pelican Awards are presented by the Louisiana Society for Hospital Public Relations and Marketing. Kelly Zimmerman was presented with the Golden Pelican Award as the Public Relations Practitioner of The Year. The team earned six Pelican Awards for internal and external publications and OLOL was presented with three certificates of merit. 

LSU alumnus Richard P. Desselles Jr. was granted the Meritorious Service Award by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Desselles was recognized for outstanding leadership and achievement in support of the Department’s Mineral Management Service programs for the assessment and evaluation of mineral resources on the outer continental shelf. His parents are Richard and Emeline Desselles of Baton Rouge. 

Mickey Christensen, president of TQM Systems, has been presented the Outstanding Achievement Award by the Automotive Industry Action Group. The award is presented  to volunteers in  recognition of substantial contribution and leadership on behalf of the automotive industry. 

Lafayette-based Home Furniture Co. has been included — for the second consecutive year — in Furniture Today’s “Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores.” Home Furniture Co. has five stores in Louisiana and two in Texas. 

Eric Courville, of Breaux Bridge, has been named the best professional truck driver in Louisiana after receiving the highest overall score at the 2008 Louisiana Truck Driving Championships. The competition is sponsored by the Louisiana Motor Transport Association Inc. Courville, who drives for FedEx Freight East, qualifies to compete in the American Trucking Association’s National Truck Driving Championships. From the local area, Jaye Hebert, of Reyes Holdings LLC in Thibodaux, won the  five-axle sleeper category.  

The Legacy  Planning Group LLC, of Zachary, has been named to a list of the most dependable wealth managers for women in the United States for 2008. The list appears in the June 16 issue of Forbes magazine. It was compiled by Goldline Research. 

Thomas K. Kliebert Jr., of Convent, with the 23rd Judicial District Court, has been named a fellow of the Louisiana Bar Association.
