Business Honors for June 29, 2008
Dr. Gloria Richard-Davis and Dr. Darrell J. Carmen, both from Louisiana and Southern University graduates, were on the “Best and Brightest in Medicine” list published in Black Enterprise magazine. Richard-Davis is chair and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Meharry Medical College. Carmen is a urologist and involved as principal investigator in projects at the Georgia Urology Research Institute. Richard-Davis is the daughter of John and Hester Richard of Opelousas. Carmen is the son of Henry and Theresa Carmen of Baker.
Kelli Shealy, director of human resources at Fenstermaker, earned certification as a senior professional in human resources from the Human Resource Certification Institute, based on experience and passing an exam.
Lisa Formeller, of Sew Elegant LLC in Denham Springs, has completed specialized training at Custom Home Furnishings Academy in North Carolina for certification as a career professional fabrication workroom, which specializes in custom window treatments, pillows and bedding.
The Louisiana County Agricultural Agents Association honored several LSU AgCenter agents and specialists in the local area. A Distinguished Service Award wnet to Shaney Hill, extension agent in Terrebonne Parish. The association’s Achievement Awards went to extension fisheries agent David Bourgeois from Terrebonne Parish and former soybean and feed grain specialist David Lanclos, who now is with Syngenta Crop Protection. James Devillier, extension agent in East Feliciana Parish, was recognized for his service on the National Agricultural County Agents Association board.
The Louisiana State Bar Association, in conjunction with the Louisiana Supreme Court, recognized pro bono accomplishments. Honored in the local area were: Career Public Interest Award: James A. Wayne Sr. , executive director of Capital Area Legal Services Corp. in Baton Rouge; Pro Bono Publico Award: V. Charles Cusimano, of Hebert, Spencer, Cusimano and Fry, and M. Brent Hicks, of McGlinchey Stafford PLLC, both from Baton Rouge; Law Student Pro Bono Award: Caroline F. Johnson, LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and Flora Powell, Southern University Law Center.
Dexcomm in Lafayette has been awarded the Gold 24/7 Call Center Certification Award for the fourth consecutive year by the Association of Teleservices International. The certification recognizes good business practices, levels of redundancy for 24/7 preparedness and ongoing evaluations through a peer review program focusing on 99.9 percent run time.
The Louisiana State Bar Association Young Lawyers Section presented the following awards locally: Bat P. Sullivan Jr. Chair’s Award: Angelique Duhon Freel, an assistant attorney general with the Louisiana Department of Justice, and Michelle F. Plauche of Phelps Dunbar LLP in Baton Rouge; Michaelle Pitard Wynne Professionalism Award: Kelly E. Balfour, who is in private practice working in conjunction with the Law Offices of Ossie Brown; Pro Bono Award: Christopher K. Jones, a partner with Keogh, Cox & Wilson Ltd. of Baton Rouge; Service to the Public Award: Lafayette Parish Bar Association for its “Advice, Attorneys, Answers!” program; Service to the Bar Award: Baton Rouge Bar Association for its program “Cocktails with the Court.”
LSU AgCenter faculty members and administrators have been honored by the Association for Communication Excellence in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Life and Human Sciences. Tom Merrill, a professor/editor in LSU AgCenter communications, was recognized with the ACE Media Relations Award of Excellence. Fred Piazza, chief information officer for the AgCenter, received the Information Technology Award of Excellence. Other honors went to the LSU AgCenter communications and information technology faculty and staff members in the ACE critique and awards program. The Bronze Award for best innovative use of communication technology went to Bruce Schultz, Davis Dautreuil and Megan Smith for a new AgCenter rice blog. Mark Claesgens received a Bronze Award in the service photo category for his shot of the AgCenter’s Smart Bodies program. Elma Sue McCallum, Tom Merrill, Tobie Blanchard, Graig Gautreaux and Linda Benedict received an award for their work in promoting the Center’s AgMagic event.
The National Child Support Enforcement Association has named Louisiana the most-improved program in the United States. The national association grades states based on documented improvement in service delivery as well as the creation of initiatives to increase the performance of support enforcement services.
