New Orleans supermarket looks to Baton Rouge
New Orleans-based upscale supermarket chain Robért Fresh Market is looking to locate at the former Acadian Village shopping center being redeveloped.
The state Bond Commission gave preliminary approval Thursday to $1 billion in GoZone bonds, including $4 million for a “full-service supermarket at 3525 Perkins Road,” the shopping center that was formerly home to Wal-Mart and Books-A-Million and now has an Acme Oyster House under construction.
Final approval of the commission is still required for the bonds to actually be sold or issued.
According to the request, the project would create 50 construction jobs and 100 jobs.
The center, which has been dormant for years before the Acme Oyster House began going up, is being redeveloped by Commercial Properties Development Corp., the real estate development arm of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.
A spokesman for the foundation was unavailable for comment. Mark Robért, the chain’s owner, could not be reached in time for comment.
According to Robért’s Web site, the chain has stores on Robert E. Lee Drive in New Orleans and West Esplanade Avenue in Metairie. It indicates its New Orleans stores on Canal Street and St. Claude Avenue are closed because of Hurricane Katrina, though one is set to open Uptown at Claiborne and Carrollton avenues in July.
