Business Honors for May 11, 2008

Dr. Robert D. Westerman has been named recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the Louisiana Dental Association. The award is presented to members who exemplify the highest standards of professional conduct in dentistry and have made extraordinary contributions to organized dentistry and their community.
 
Betty Fomby-White, a Southern University School of Nursing associate professor, has been named winner of the Helen Johnson Creemens Excellence in Teaching Award by the Baton Rouge District Nurses Association. The award is given to a nurse educator who teaches full time in East Baton Rouge; promotes the professional nursing values of caring, compassion, understanding, kindness, respect and dignity; displays a professional image of nursing; and serves in roles to advance professional nurses and nursing practice in Louisiana.
 
Savanna Christina Ordoyne has been named recipient of the Greater Baton Rouge Society for Human Resource Management’s spring scholarship. Ordoyne is a human resource management senior in LSU’s E.J. Ourso College of Business and a native of Thibodaux. The $1,000 scholarship is warded each fall and spring semester to the human resource management student graduating with the highest grade point average.

Teri Maggio has earned the National Certification for Public Library Administrators. Maggio, director of the Assumption Parish Library, is the first librarian in the South and the third person nationwide to be awarded this credential. She was certified by the American Library Association and the Allied Professions Association.

Olivier Moreteau, a professor at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, has been named a Fellow of the Louisiana Bar Foundation.

A Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program publication won an Award of Excellence at the annual International Blue Pencil competition of the National Association of Government Communicators. The Louisiana team producing “Vanishing Before Our Eyes: Cheniere Woods and the Birds that Depend on Them” were Wylie C. Barrow and Bill Fontenot, writers; Madeline Barrow, editor; Richard DeMay and David Muth, contributors; and Diane Baker, graphic designer and illustrator. Photographs were contributed by Charlie Bush, David Cagnolatti, Bill Goulet and Michael Gray. Moran Printing Inc. printed the document.

The law firm of Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitenvent, Carrere and Denegre L.L.P has been named to a list titled “Top 10 Law Firms that Understand Economic Development” by Southern Business and Development magazine. The list names law firms that help companies find locations in the South for operations, and identify optimal tax structures, maximize incentives, and cost-effective facilities. Southern Business and Development surveyed developers in the regions to the establish the top 10 list. Partner Fred L. Chevalier was commended for his involvement in projects, including Gulf Opportunity Zone benefits, tax increment financing, special tax districts, tax sharing and tax credits.

Local hospitals received awards at the Gordon and Breaux Pelican Awards, held to recognize excellence in hospital public relations and marketing. Woman’s Hospital was awarded Best of Show in graphic design. Lafayette General Medical Center received the Jacqueline Leonhard Award for writing excellence for its “Hospital Week Campaign.” The Fitness Club at Woman’s Center for Wellness was awarded the Best of Show In Strategy for the “I Am” campaign. Baton Rouge General Medical Center was awarded the Frank V. LeBlanc Best of Show Award for Pink@the Polls 2007: A Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. The Lagniappe Award went to Word Backstrom with Designs by Word in New Orleans. This award is given to a reporter, account representative or vendor who demonstrates creativity, ingenuity and principles in assisting LSHPRM members in furthering communications. The Creative Director Of The Year award went to Barbara Riuz, creative services manager for Baton Rouge General Medical Center. The Public Relations Practitioner of the Year award went to Kelly Zimmerman, public relations coordinator for Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. The Marketer Of The Year award will go to Terri McNorton, vice president of marketing and communications for Baton Rouge General Medical Center. LSHPRM is an affiliate of the Louisiana Hospital Association.
