Ascension seeks chemical plants
The Ascension Economic Development Corp. has launched a national marketing campaign targeting specialty chemical manufacturers who might locate new plants beside existing large manufacturers in the parish.
The effort began last year with a pilot program by SSA Consultants of Baton Rouge that identified possible downstream chemical plant opportunities near the parish’s largest chemical maker, BASF, in Geismar.
The campaign includes a brochure by Mindworx Marketing of Prairieville and access to AEDC’s newly completed geographic information system, or GIS, program developed by LEO LLC and CK and Associates, both of Baton Rouge. More than 300 members of the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers group received the marketing materials and online access. AEDC recently played host to a site selection consultant representing a confidential international company.
“He commented that (the GIS program) was the most advanced tool he had seen in his 15 years of chemical consulting at the local and regional economic development level,” said Tommy Kurtz, AEDC’s president.
Syngenta to close waste incinerator
Syngenta Crop Protection Inc. will close a hazardous waste incinerator unit at its St. Gabriel facility but there are no plans to close other operations at the 1,200-acre site, which actually is experiencing growth, company officials said Thursday.
Sherry Ford, a Syngenta corporate spokeswoman, said 20 jobs will be affected by the business decision to contract waste disposal with an outside company, but they will be reassigned within the facility when the incinerator closes at midyear.
