The parent companies of two Westside industrial plants have received national honors.

Placid Refining Co. LLC, which has a refinery in Port Allen, was named one of “10 Best Companies for Employee Financial Security” in 2007 by The Principal Group financial services.

Dow Chemical, which has a plant located along the boundary line between West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes, was named one of the nation’s “100 Best Corporate Citizens” of 2008 by Corporate Responsibility Officer magazine.

The Principal Group said its award recognizes companies that find a formula for “fiscal and physical fitness for employees.”
Placid Chief Executive Officer Dan Robinson said that having “a refinery on the Mississippi River” means a location where “there are
more industrial chemical refineries than any other place in the U.S.”

Robinson also said that in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, “the competition for good employees is very, very steep.”

Robinson said good benefits help a business retain employees, and added, “when you keep them, that’s a big cost savings for the company.”

Robinson said that when a company gives good benefits, “the return is very loyal, hardworking employees.”

The Dow award was based on a survey of 1,000 American companies by the IW Financial consulting firm. Companies were judged on corporate citizenship in eight areas — climate change, employee relations, social and governance ratings, environment, financial governance, human rights, lobbying and philanthropy.

During 2007, Dow received the highest rating possible for standards of corporate governance from GovernanceMetrics International, and was a top performer in the global chemical industry division of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.

It was also recognized for its work in China, and CEO Andrew Liveris and Dow received the global citizenship award from the Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University for leadership in climate change and sustainable development.

Liveris said the latest corporate citizen ranking shows progress Dow has made toward becoming “the largest, most profitable and most respected chemical company in the word.”
