Drs. Mark Hausmann and Karl Leblanc perform a laparoscopic sleeve surgery at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. The surgeons remove a large portion of the stomach and form a ‘sleeve’ so the patient can’t eat as much.
By the Numbers
Some facts and figures on obesity and bariatric surgery:
U.S. STATS: About 15 million U.S. residents are morbidly obese, which means at least 100 pounds overweight, according to the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. This year, an estimated 205,000 people with morbid obesity will have some form of bariatric surgery. That’s about twice the number of bariatric surgeries performed in 2003, the society said.
IN LOUISIANA: 34 surgeons are performing bariatric procedures. This year, those doctors are expected to do 4,080 surgeries, the society said.
COST: The cost for a surgery can be as much as $40,000, says Aon, a global insurance and consulting company.
