Ascension School Board District 7

Ascension Parish School Board Vice President Troy J. Gautreau Sr. will seek a third term as a representative of District 7 this fall, he announced in a statement.

Gautreau, a lifelong parish resident, said in his statement that he has lobbied hard for the Gonzales-area School Board district, as well as the entire parish.

In the statement, he pointed to his knowledge of technology and interest in funding it, his experience with budgeting and his emphasis on making redistricting efforts transparent.

Gautreau, who first won the District 7, Seat A in 2002 as an unopposed candidate, qualified in July for the Oct. 2 election.

District 7 is a dual-member district with two board-member seats, A and B.

Gautreau said his knowledge of computer science — he has a bachelor’s degree in the subject — has suited him to serve as chair of the board Technology Committee.

He said he has helped introduce districtwide initiatives to periodically upgrade classroom technologies, including laptops, classroom computers, digital projectors, smart boards and wireless networks at all schools.

Of the $100 million generated from a property tax extension last year, Gautreau said more than $40 million was allocated for projects within his district. Voters extended the board’s 15.08-mill tax by four years.

Gautreau also pointed to his contributions as chairman of the Budget Committee to make the budgeting process “much more transparent” so expenditure growth can be identified.

Gautreau added that the state recognized parish schools as first in fiscal management. The Standard & Poor’s ratings agency has given the school system an AA- rating, which means the system saves hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest payments on its debt.

The system has an emergency fund that is 16 percent of the budget, or about $26 million, and has a healthy fund balance for financial rough spots.

Gautreau said he also serves as chairman of the Growth Impact Committee, which was formed to address growth and subsequent redistricting.

“Redistricting is one of the toughest processes any school board will go through,” Gautreau said in his statement.

Thank you Mr. Gautreau for voting against the inneffective and arbitrary redistricting plan 2F and for providing wonderful information that can be used in later efforts to redistrict in a more cost effective manner that honors the Civil Rights of our residents. I truly hope you win the election as you have the interest of our children and community in your heart and mind.
