Council split over management decision
DONALDSONVILLE — City Council members split Tuesday over how far to push Ascension Parish government on hiring a local resident to manage the west bank recreation program if the parish takes over.
Under a proposed agreement, the city would pay the parish $46,000 annually to coordinate baseball, softball, basketball and other west bank programs.
But parish officials struck language proposed by the Donaldsonville City Council earlier that would have required hiring a west bank resident as coordinator.
Some council members balked at the loss of that provision, saying it left the city without a voice in who would coordinate west bank recreation.
“If we need to get into a gym or field and it’s locked, would we have to call someone from Prairieville to come open up the facility?” Councilman Anthony Huey asked during a meeting on the issue.
“We need that person here. We need someone who knows the situation here, and no one knows that better than someone who lives here.”
