The River Region Art Association is celebrating its new partnership with Houmas House Plantation on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house.
Residents are invited to view the art on display at the association’s new gallery inside the Houmas House Plantation gift shop, 40136 La. 942, Darrow.
The association moved its art gallery July 1 from its smaller Gonzales gallery. The new space allows the RRAA to display more art and expose its members’ work to more visitors.

Time to recycle
Residents may recycle their cardboard, newspapers, magazines, cartons, aluminum, tin and plastic containers Saturday during the monthly Ascension Parish Recycling Road Show.
Drop off recyclable materials from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart store in Prairieville.
Wax-coated frozen-food packaging, take-out food containers, aerosol cans, plastic bags, six-pack rings and wire hangers are among the items that cannot be recycled, said parish Environmental Manager Terance Irvin. Call (225) 621-5730.
Commissioners class set
The Ascension Clerk of Court’s Office is hosting training classes this month to certify new election commissioners.
The classes are set for 6 p.m. July 21 and July 23 at the courthouse annex on Irma Boulevard in Gonzales and 5:30 p.m. July 22 at the courthouse in Donaldsonville.
Attendance is required at one session only, and commissioners already certified do not have to attend, according to a news release from Clerk of Court Kermit Hart Bourque.
Certified commissioners earn $200 for working at the polls on election days.
Any qualified voter who is not entitled to assistance in voting and is not a candidate in the election may be selected as a commissioner after being certified through the commissioners school.
Call (225) 473-9866 or (225) 621-8400, ext. 7.
Perseverance pays off
It’s been a busy summer for Donaldsonville High School senior Nikia Martin. She attended the St. Elizabeth Hospital’s Area Health Education Center summer program and worked at the Donaldsonville Sonic.
During the day, she learned about the medical profession, and in the evening hours she would work a shift at the drive-in.
