July 3rd event set for Crescent Park

Donaldsonville’s annual “July 3rd Fireworks on the River” celebration is set for Friday in Crescent Park.

Food and beverages will be sold and Water’s Edge and Mojeaux will perform beginning at 6 p.m., said Donaldsonville Downtown Development District Executive Director John Rodgers.

The event ends with a fireworks show set for 9 p.m. overlooking the Mississippi River. No ice chests will be allowed at the park.

Art association adds youth classes

The popularity of the River Region Art Association’s summer art workshops for youth has resulted in added classes.

The demand  led the association to add classes in acrylic painting and drawing with watercolor and colored pencils from 10 a.m. to noon July 6-9 at the Art Center on Magnolia Avenue in Gonzales, said Donna Braud, the association’s public relations chairwoman.

The fee is $45. Registration is at the Art Center and applications are available at  http://www.artgumbo.org

The group’s new Art Gallery opened July 1 at Houmas House Plantation in Darrow. The River Region Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in the rear of the Houmas House gift shop.

‘Fiddler on Roof’ tickets available

Tickets are on sale for the Ascension Community Theatre’s production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’

The musical is set for July 9-12 and July 16-19. Dinner theater performances will be held July 24-25 at the Pasqua Theater, 823 Felicity St., Gonzales.

To purchase tickets, call (225) 647-1230 or visit the box office at the Pasqua Theater from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday.

Groups collecting school supplies

Volunteer Ascension’s 12th annual School Tools Program and the Ascension Parish School Board are partnering with WBRZ’s Stuff the Bus project Wednesday to collect school supplies for children in need.

School supplies can be dropped off from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Office Depot parking lot.

Volunteer Ascension Executive Audrey Boudreaux said the most wanted items include binders, dry erase markers, construction paper and dividers.

Art winners named for Red Hot  show

The temperature and the art were hot at the Art Gumbo Community Market and Red Hot Art exhibit on  June 20 at the River Region Art Association Gallery in Gonzales. In addition to a wide variety of art on display, the event featured the winners of the group’s annual Red Hot Art show.

Peggy Carbo won first place in the adult division, with Louise Hanson in second place and Michael Bianchetti, third. In the youth division, Carly Kimbrough was first, and Katelyn Monceret won second place. The next Art Gumbo Community Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 18 at Houmas House Plantation and Gardens.
