CUT OFF — A Lafourche Parish sheriff’s deputy fired his weapon at a motorist who ran over the law enforcement officer, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

With the West Larose Bridge closed for repairs until Dec. 15, Deputy Lathaniel Jackson was directing traffic about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday along a detour route at the La. 1 intersection with the Cut Off Bridge.

In the congested traffic, Lionell Barrie, 60, of Cut Off,  was traveling west on Cut Off Bridge in a 1990 Buick Century, according to the news release.

Barrie turned onto La. 1, striking Jackson, who then drew his duty weapon and fired three rounds at Barrie’s vehicle, troopers said.

Barrie was not struck by any of the rounds and his vehicle stopped about 100 feet south of the intersection, troopers said.

Jackson arrested Barrie, who was later given a blood-alcohol breath test that registered a result of 0.058 percent blood-alcohol content, according to State Police. The legal limit for driving while intoxicated in Louisiana is 0.08.

Also, a urine sample was collected to run a toxicology test, troopers reported.

Jackson, who suffered minor injuries, was transported to St. Anne General Hospital.

State Police said Jackson’s fully marked police car was parked on the shoulder with the car’s emergency lights on, and he was also wearing a reflective vest as he directed traffic.

Charges are pending the completion of the investigation, troopers said.

A traffic investigator with State Police Troop C is looking into the car-pedestrian wreck, while State Police Region 1 detectives review the shooting portion.
