Monthly recycling program begins
Residents can recycle their newspapers, plastics and cardboard on the first Saturday of each month at the Prairieville Wal-Mart, announced Terance Irvin, parish environmental manager.

Irvin said recycling trucks will be at the Prairieville store from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and the first Saturday of each month next year as part of the Keep Ascension Beautiful Recycling Roadshow, an initiative to reduce the amount of waste in area landfills and encourage recycling.

Keep Ascension Beautiful, a committee appointed by the Ascension Parish Council to promote recycling and litter control, partners with The Recycling Foundation, Inc., Wal-Mart, Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful to hold the event.

Irvin said residents who cannot attend the monthly recycling program can drop off their recyclable items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the parish recycling center at 42077 Churchpoint Road in Gonzales.

Volunteers are needed to help with each Roadshow. To volunteer, call Irvin at (225) 621-5722 or e-mail tirvin@ apgov.us.

Museum to host town hall meeting
The River Road African American Museum is hosting a town hall meeting Saturday at the Donaldsonville City Hall to inform the community on the museum’s efforts to renovate historic downtown buildings.

Museum Executive Director Kathe Hambrick Jackson said she will update residents on the museum’s efforts to save a four-room schoolhouse, True Friends Benevolent Society Hall, Africa Plantation and other historic sites in the area.

Representatives from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Foundation for Historical Louisiana, Association of African American Museums, the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum and Louisiana Office of Culture, Recreation and Tourism are expected to attend, she said.
