With Memorial Day approaching later this month, Veterans Memorial Park Committee members want to honor the oldest veteran in the parish, but they need help finding him.
The group plans to bestow accolades during an 11 a.m. Memorial Day ceremony at the park on Irma Boulevard in Gonzales, Park Committee Chairman Jack Watson said.
He said the eldest known veteran in the parish is 90, so any older veterans or anyone who knows of one is asked to call Watson at (225) 698-9204.
Driving class scheduled
The Ascension Council on Aging will host another AARP 55 Alive Safe Driving Course at the Gonzales Senior Center at 8 a.m. Monday. Cost for the course is $10.
Lunch will be available at the site if ordered at the time of registration. Classroom size is limited, so organizers ask applicants to sign up soon by calling (225) 621-5750.
Youth football event set
Donaldsonville Youth Flag Football registration is set for boys and girls ages 6 to 15. The fee is $30.
Registration at Lowery Elementary School will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and will continue at those times May 17 and May 24.
Registration forms can also be filled out at Donaldsonville City Hall. Games are played only on Saturday for five weeks starting June 7.

Plants for sale in Gonzales
The Gonzales Garden Club holds its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 pm. today on the lawn of the Gonzales City Hall at Irma Boulevard and Cornerview Road. There will be a variety of plants available during the sale, which is supported by members and friends of the club.
School officials named
The school year is just wrapping up, but the Ascension Parish School Board is preparing staff rosters for next year. In case, you missed hearing the names of the new assistant principals announced this week, they are: Candy Wikman, Pecan Grove Primary; Mikie Long, Prairieville Primary School; and Patricia Espinoza, Duplessis Primary School.
Chamber seeking class
The Ascension Parish Chamber of Commerce is receiving applications for next year’s Leadership Ascension.
The 10-month program begins with a two-day retreat in late August and runs from September through May.
