GONZALES — Bryan Reed, 17, typically spent his lunch hour practicing the euphonium.
“I’d practice for an hour three days a week,” Reed said.
The euphonium is a brass instrument with a baritone sound; Reed’s first instrument was the trombone.
Also a drum major for the East Ascension High School band, the senior has accepted a full music scholarship to Southeastern Louisiana University.
Reed started playing music in the sixth-grade at Gonzales Middle School.
He’ll be in the beginner marching band and in the jazz band.
Reed was one of 13 senior band members honored recently at a morning ceremony for students planning to continue with music in college.
Band director Patti Roussel said that 13 out of 18 senior band members are continuing with music at either SLU or LSU next year.
“That’s a big percentage,” she said.
Glenn Hemberger, SLU band director, agreed.
Hemberger spoke to the students during the ceremony.
“Usually when I go to ceremonies like this, there are one or two students who are going on with their music,” he said.
Seven students will be at SLU; six will be at LSU.
